Lip Enhancement

Lips play a vital role in everyday life – in speech, nonverbal expression, kissing, and the display of emotions and mood. This unique combination of skin, mucosa, and muscle has a powerful influence in creating first impressions – whether it’s a mother’s first contact with her baby, the first kiss between young lovers, or simple daily communication.

Because of their constant movement, age-related changes in the lip area progress more rapidly and are more pronounced than in other parts of the face – especially in smokers. Often, the facial expression doesn't match how we actually feel – thin lips can give an impression of strictness or displeasure, while drooping corners and deep marionette lines in older age can make the face appear sad.As we age, the lips lose the bone support of the jaw and teeth, and the distance between the nose and the lips increases. The upper teeth become hidden, while the lower teeth become more visible – creating a harsh, stern look.

Men with full lips in women often associate them with sensuality. Most men still remember Angelina Jolie’s first film appearances, where she stirred imaginations and sparked envy among women. The seductive power of lips has long been recognized in fashion and advertising. After all, lipstick remains the most essential item in a makeup kit. Studies have shown that models featured in commercials usually have fuller lips, and that advertisements are more successful when they subtly convey messages of sensuality and allure.

The lips have different anatomical structures — the upper lip is composed of three subunits, while the lower lip consists of two. The concept of beautiful lips is once again defined by the golden ratio: ideally, the thickness of the lower to the upper lip should be in a 1:1.6 ratio, with the lower lip being fuller. When viewed from the side, the lower lip should lie 1–2 mm in front of the upper lip. The red portion of ideal lips is sharply bordered by the vermilion border — a hairless area even in men — which follows the contour of the Cupid’s bow. The Cupid’s bow has a characteristic pearly sheen, often highlighted in cosmetics with a lighter tone. A distinctive feature of young and attractive lips is the philtrum — two gently parallel vertical ridges extending from the nose to the upper lip’s red zone, ending at the center of the Cupid’s bow. With age, these ridges become shallower.

In aesthetic lip procedures, we can influence the shape, volume, and position of the lips. The most popular and natural method is the use of hyaluronic acid fillers, which restore the desired shape, sensuality, and volume in targeted areas. Adding volume also tightens the delicate lip skin and smooths out the vertical (so-called “smoker’s”) lines that often form on the border of the red part of the lips. We can also recreate the vertical philtral ridges of the upper lip — a hallmark of youthful lips. Vertical lines on the skin above the lip can be softened with a chemical peel or superficial hyaluronic acid injections.

Injections into the wrong areas or excessive filler use by an inexperienced provider can lead to so-called “duck lips” and an artificial appearance of the whole face. Even worse are permanent fillers, which are not permitted in Slovenia; they carry long-term complications, not long-term beauty (e.g., silicone or other synthetic fillers). Lips are the central and most visible part of the lower face, so moderation is key when rejuvenating them. Because of the lips’ delicate tissue, mild swelling often occurs after the enhancement, which typically resolves within a day. Rare side effects may include bruising, excessive swelling, allergic reaction, or inflammation, but these are extremely rare and generally nothing to worry about.
