A comprehensive guide for women considering breast augmentation surgery

5.1.2026

1. Ten situations in which women begin to think about breast augmentation

Women most often start thinking about breast augmentation when:

  1. you feel that your breasts are "too small" compared with the rest of your body
  2. you always use push-up padding in bras because you do not feel good without it
  3. after childbirth and breastfeeding, your breasts have "deflated" and lost fullness
  4. one breast is significantly larger than the other, which makes it difficult to choose clothes and bras
  5. even when you are in good physical shape, you do not feel confident in swimwear
  6. clothes on your upper body never fit the way you would like them to
  7. your breasts have lost volume and shape after major weight loss
  8. you want a more defined cleavage and a fuller upper breast pole
  9. you have been thinking about surgery for a long time, but fear or lack of information has held you back
  10. you want a subtle but clear feeling of greater femininity and a more balanced figure, without it being too obvious

If you recognise yourself in many of these points and they have been bothering you for a long time, not just occasionally, it makes sense to book a consultation with an aesthetic surgeon. Breast augmentation is a clearly indicated procedure in many cases, but it is not a solution for every physical concern, which is why an honest conversation with the doctor is essential.

2. How breast size and shape affect self-image

Breasts are more than just a "cup size". They affect:

  • the sense of femininity
  • the relationship to nudity in front of a partner
  • confidence in clothes and swimwear
  • posture and the way a woman "carries" her body

3. Why breasts change with age

Even if you were happy with your breasts at one stage of life, they change over time:

  • pregnancy and breastfeeding cause stretching of the skin and changes in glandular tissue
  • fluctuations in body weight affect the amount of fat in the breasts
  • hormonal changes, such as ageing or menopause, affect tissue structure
  • loss of skin elasticity and gravity lead to laxity and "empty" breasts

4. What types of breast augmentation are there, and which is best for you?

Klinika Višnjar offers several different breast augmentation methods, which differ in materials, insertion methods, incisions, and extent.

Breast augmentation with Motiva® implants

This is the most common and classic method. High-quality Motiva® silicone implants are used. They are designed to feel natural and soft and to reduce the risk of certain problems, such as capsular contracture.

Suitable for women who:

  • want a noticeable increase in cup size, one or more sizes
  • have little of their own breast tissue
  • want fuller cleavage and a more defined upper breast pole

Breast augmentation with the patient’s own fat

With this method, the patient’s own fat is used. It is removed by liposuction from another part of the body, such as the abdomen, hips, or thighs, processed, and then injected into the breasts.

Suitable for:

  • moderate enlargement, usually up to one cup size
  • women who do not want implants
  • correction of minor asymmetries or improvement of the cleavage line

Hybrid breast augmentation

Hybrid augmentation uses both implants and the patient’s own fat. The implants add volume and projection, while the fat smooths the transition and adds natural fullness where it is most needed.

This is the right choice if:

  • you want a very natural appearance and feel
  • you have a slim figure with little soft tissue over the implant
  • you want the upper breast pole to look softer and less “implanted”

MIA Femtech® breast augmentation

MIA Femtech® is a new breast augmentation method that is minimally invasive, takes around 30 minutes, is performed under local anaesthesia, leaves no scars on the breasts, and allows very fast recovery. Klinika Višnjar is the first and only clinic in Slovenia and the wider region where we perform this type of procedure.

It is suitable for women who:

  • want a discreet breast enlargement
  • want a quick recovery
  • want no visible scars on the breasts

Motiva® Preservé breast augmentation

Motiva® Preservé is an advanced breast augmentation method focused on preserving breast tissue, minimal invasiveness, a small incision in the inframammary fold, and fast healing. The results are natural because advanced Motiva implants are used, with emphasis on a natural feel and movement.

Suitable for:

  • women who want an increase of more than one cup size
  • those who want the smallest possible incision and want to return to daily activities as soon as possible
  • situations where it is important to preserve as much native tissue and breast sensation as possible

5. How to choose the right size and shape, it is not just about “cup size”

The size and shape of implants, or the volume of fat, are not determined “by eye”. The surgeon takes into account:

  • your height, weight, and chest width
  • skin elasticity
  • nipple position
  • your aesthetic wishes, whether discreet or more pronounced
  • your lifestyle, such as sport, clothing style, and work

The goal is a result that fits your body, not one where the breasts “enter the room first”. The right size is the one that makes you happy and confident, not the one that becomes a burden.

6. A common question: "Will I still be 'me' after surgery?"

This is a fear many people have. Well-planned breast augmentation does not change your personality, but it does change how you feel in clothes, in intimacy, and in front of the mirror. Studies and personal experience show that many women feel better about themselves and their bodies after a mature decision and realistic expectations.

You should not choose the procedure because of a partner, friends, or “fashion trends”. You should do it for yourself.

7. How visible will the scars be?

The most common incisions for breast augmentation with implants are:

  • in the fold under the breast, the inframammary scar
  • around the lower part of the areola, the periareolar approach
  • in the armpit, the transaxillary approach

The incision in the fold under the breast is used most often because it allows good control of implant positioning, and the scar remains hidden in the natural fold. Methods such as MIA Femtech® and Motiva® Preservé place special emphasis on minimal scarring and tissue preservation. That means a smaller incision and faster rehabilitation than with classic breast augmentation.

In most patients, scars fade over time and become difficult to notice, especially if they follow instructions for scar care and sun protection.

8. How long does recovery take?

Recovery depends on the method, the extent of the procedure, and personal factors, but in general you can expect the following:

  • the first few days: there is tightness and pain, which is managed with medication. We recommend rest, sleeping on your back, and wearing a special compression bra
  • 7 to 10 days: most swelling decreases, and most patients return to lighter work duties
  • 3 to 6 weeks: gradual return to sporting activities, depending on the surgeon’s instructions
  • 3 to 6 months: the breasts “settle”, the tissues adapt, and the result looks increasingly natural

With minimally invasive techniques such as MIA Femtech® and Motiva® Preservé, recovery is usually quicker, and returning to daily activities is possible much earlier than with classic augmentation.

9. How long do implants last, and do they need to be replaced?

Modern implants have a long lifespan. Studies and guidelines show that implants may last 15 to 20 years or longer, but this is not a “guaranteed” number. Implants can be damaged, they age over time, and at some point they may need to be replaced.

It is important that:

  • you attend regular follow-up examinations
  • you visit the surgeon if you notice any changes, such as increased firmness or a change in shape
  • you understand that breast augmentation is a long-term decision that requires long-term follow-up

Patient experience: "I finally have breasts that suit my body."

After two pregnancies and breastfeeding, I felt that my breasts no longer belonged to my body. At the consultation at Klinika Višnjar, I felt for the first time that someone was really listening to me. The first time I wore a dress without a bra and was happy with what I saw, I knew the decision had been the right one.
